ICT & Computing Department

At Therfield, we offer students the opportunity to learn about both the application of computer hardware and software and the development of new technological solutions. In our dedicated ICT & Computing suite the students are taught how to become efficient users of digital technology, ranging from essential office skills to programming and sequencing.


Key Stage 3

The KS3 curriculum develops student skills in the use of mainstream software packages, and the investigation of different ways in which they can handle and use data. Students also develop their creative use of ICT through a range of stimulating projects including website creation, game development and the development of applications ('apps') for mobile devices.

Students will also be introduced to both a text based and graphical based programming language in KS3. They will study the basics of computers and learn how to write their own computer code using the SCRATCH, KODU, Touch Development, Small Basic and Python programming languages. They will also study the theory of computing as well as further their coding skills.


Key Stage 4

As you are aware ICT/Computing curriculum is changing from 2017. From 2017 there will be no ICT in GCSE/A Level. Instead you have an option of doing Computer Science or Vocational Skills such as BTEC. To adapt these changes we will be introducing Computer Science to our curriculum in 2016.

GCSE Computer Science develops “underpinning knowledge” and transferable skills for progression to A Levels or BTEC Nationals and to Higher Education or the workplace. 

It includes topics that extend your understanding and aid progression, for example, the internet and database.

The skills and knowledge developed through this qualification help you to:

· Understand and apply the fundamental principles and concepts of Computer Science, including abstraction, decomposition, logic, algorithms, and data representation

· Analyse problems in computational terms through practical experience of solving such problems, including designing, writing and debugging programs

· Think creatively, innovatively, analytically, logically and critically

· Understand the components that make up digital systems, and how they communicate with one another 

· Understand the impacts of digital technology on the individual and the wider society

· Apply mathematical skills relevant to Computer Science.


Examination Board:  Edexcel

Qualification: GCSE Computer Science 

Component 1: Exam 1hr 40min -40%

Component 2: Exam 2hrs -40% 

Component 3: 20hrs of supervised assessment -20% 

New Edexcel GCSE specification contains three components, Principle of Computer Science, Application of Computational Thinking and a Computer Science Project. It offers wide range of choice and flexibility.

We will be using Python to product the project. 

Students will submit their program with a report showing how the program was developed, tested and evaluated.

The project will require students to create a program that will include the following:

· Data input and storage

· Processing Data

· Producing output based on processed data.

The development of the project is also being assessed, not just the program.


Edexcel GCSE ICT 

This KS4 curriculum develops student skills in the use and development of:

  • Communication technology
  • Mobile devices
  • Development of multimedia and digital products
  • ICT in the work place
  • Online Commerce

The course is further enriched with game development through text or graphical based platforms and programming languages.

Students sit an exam with and complete a controlled assessment project.

Unit 1 is an exam is worth 40% of the GCSE, and is 1 hour and 30 minutes long.

Unit 2 is a controlled assessment (coursework) project worth 60% of the GCSE.

The specification, assessment and examination of this curriculum is provided by the Edexcel exam board.


Key Stage 5

The KS5 curriculum encourages students to use a wide range of software and hardware to create ICT systems, solving business problems. Students will study the effects of ICT in the world today and expand on your understanding of developments in technology. They will also learn to work in teams and to manage their own project.


In year 12, the AS component of the course requires students to undertake: 

Unit 1: Practical Problem Solving in the Digital World

Unit 2: Living in the Digital World


In year 13, the A2 component of the course requires students to undertake: 

Unit 3: The Use of ICT in the Digital World

Unit 4: Coursework: Practical Issues Involved in the Use of ICT in the Digital World


The course is examined and assessed by the AQA exam board. Unit 1 involves sitting a 1 hour and 30 minute exam that requires the completion of coursework, which is used to answer some of the questions in the paper. Unit 2 is also assessed via a 90 minute exam.

Unit 3 is which is taken in year 13 as part of A2 ICT, requires students to sit a 2 hour exam. Unit 4 completes A2 ICT, and involves the creation of an ICT system, with a written documentation.
