The first day of term (for staff) dawned a little misty and overcast, but not to worry plenty of time for the sun to make an appearance before the staff used some afternoon ‘fun’ to get ready for the new academic year...

So with meetings done, class lists compiled, text books organised and planning started the entire staff team headed out to the field for a spot of ‘teambuilding’.  Several worried and nervous faces (and thoughts o f – I have too much to do to be out here) were soon replaced with smiles, laughter and some unashamed cheating!  Working in groups, and having ‘picked’ their leadership team member from a hat, staff made their way through a series of challenges; Mrs Willman was respectfully ‘posted’ through a hole in our spiders web, while Mr Thornton and Mr Downs chose to tackle it with a ’diving leap’.  Making your way down the field with only three hoops to stand in proved too much of a challenge for one group – so they ‘appropriated’ a few more, I shall name no names, while the ‘bomb disposal’ crews were repeatedly blown up, before Mr Hogben and Mr Gallagher  (in separate teams) took two very different approaches and succeeded in diffusing it.

Meanwhile blindfolded staff trying to execute perfect shapes with a rope could only wonder what the hilarity was as four teams raced down the field on walkers, trying to combine speed and synchronicity with varying levels of success.  Working in perfect harmony was also the key for the groups trying to get their golf balls into a bucket, using only lengths of pipe, which some kind soul had cut holes into…….again the laughter could be heard across the field.  Totally unplanned the session culminated in a head to head race between two walkers teams, one steered by Mr North, with Miss Breen, Mrs Ray and Miss O’Dell making the team, versus Mr Thomas, along with Mrs Willman, Miss Ashburner and Mr Wessell.  The lead changed hands several times as staff got ‘carried away’ and stumbled off the walkers, but the finish line was just taken by Mr Thomas – rematch next year anyone?

A great way to end the first day, and to get ready for another success filled year here at Therfield – welcome back one and all!
