Champion Opens Therfield’s New MUGA  (Multi Use Games Area) -

Therfield School were privileged to welcome Surrey Storm’s Amy Flanagan to open our new floodlit MUGA (3 netball and 4 tennis courts) on Wednesday.  As well as cutting the ribbon Amy led excellent coaching sessions with the netball squads as the court was used for the very first time, along with talking to the senior students about her pathway into and through Netball.  James Malley Headteacher said, “The new court will enable the school to give greater opportunity to students to develop their skills in these important sports, especially during the winter months.  We’d like to thank Amy for providing great inspiration to our students and to wish her and Surrey Storm every success in defending their Superleague title next season.”

Netball Teams from Year 8 through to Year 11 thrived on the coaching provided by Amy, and it was the realisation of a dream for the Head of PE & Sport, Gayle Rennie, to see the students taking part. Gayle said “This is the culmination of a 10 year plan; it is brilliant to see the facility completed and our students making full use.” The Teams were able to refine previously learned skills and this has given a real focus and determination to start the season off well. Year 11 student Chloe Pratt commented “It was really great, I loved it.” Amy was even able to share with the girls, that at 5’10” she plays WD as she is “too short” for an attacking position, and that one of her team mates is over 6’ 7”. All involved agreed that the showcase had been hugely enjoyable.

Amy Flanagan, Surrey Storm – “It was lovely to meet the enthusiastic staff and students at Therfield who have waited so long for the MUGA. Having such high quality courts, one of the best I have coached on, will benefit school sports and also attract the interest of local teams and organisations. Facilities like this are highly sought and it was an honour to coach the first session there!”

The new facility is available for hire in the evenings and weekends.  Please contact the school directly for further information.
